Description
The Instructional Aide helps students with disabilities in self-sufficiency, communications, interpersonal, and mobility skills. In addition, the Instructional Aide encourages and supports students by assisting them in the performance of daily living activities necessary for their comfort, well-being and integrity. The duties of the Instructional Aide include any activity that allows the student to participate to their maximum in the least restrictive environment. These duties include, but are not limited to:

• Act as monitor and/or assistant on the van which transports the student from his home to his school and from school to home.
• Assisting the teacher or student to arrange the room’s environment to best meet the student’s physical and psychological needs.
• Assisting the student in maintaining, setting up, breaking down, turning on and off, and using augmentative device(s).
• Positioning and transferring the student on mats, in or on adaptive equipment, or in or out of a wheelchair.
• Providing gross and fine motor exercises.
• Assisting with ambulating (walker, crutches, and wheelchair).
• Aiding with toileting and grooming activities.
• Changing of diapers and/or menstrual pads.
• Monitoring the incidence and prevalence of selected health problems to medical conditions.

Who can provide services?

An Instructional Aide must be a high school graduate or have a GED. They must also have a current certification in first aid and CPR. They must have or be eligible for certification in the Non-violent Crisis Intervention Program. These certifications must be maintained during their employment. Verification of the minimal education requirements is the responsibility of the LEA. An Instructional Aide must have completed and/or be willing to complete the Special Education Paraeducator Standards for Practice.
